Australian Traffic
Australia has left-handed traffic. The traffic is regulated with round-abouts most of the time. The vehicles, inside the round-abouts, have the priority. Other than that, the vehicles, that come from right-hand side (just like in most of Europe), have priority. The drivers should be aware of pedestrians under every condition, especially at zebra stripes. Fastening seat belts both at the front seats and the back seats is mandatory.
Most of the important touristic routes are asphaltet in Australia. And the big cities are connected to each other with intercity roads that are also good quality. The situation is different in the outback. Most of the roads are "dirt roads".
The speed limit is 60 km/h inside the cities and 100-110 km/h on the intercity roads and highways. Failure to obey the speed limits is fined heavily. It is also wise to not to trust on being a tourist from overseas since the car rental companies pass the address and driving licence information to the relevant authorities. The fine is sent to whereever necessary in the world without any problem.
Alcohol limit in whole Australia is 0.5%. The police makes controls even in the outback regularly.
Driving in the outback requires a bit more care. Since the wild animals like kangaroos can jump on the road at any time, it is dangerous to drive during the night, due to the lack of visibility. Moreover, there are also limited overnighting and tanking possibilities. Plan your route, taking the need for resting into account and fill up the tank whenever possible. The automobile clubs come for help, in case of a problem with the vehicle.
Benzin and diesel are cheaper in Australia than in Europe. Benzin costs less than a Dollar per liter. On the other hand fuel is more expensive.
The driver must have his/her driving licence with, at all times. Foreign driving licences are valid in Australia for 6 months after arrival, in case they are issued in English. If not, an international driving licence should be provided. After 6 months, an Australian driving licence may be obtained with or without being have to make a new test, depending on the country where the original driving licence has been obtained.
