TV and Radio in Australia
Australia has three government channels: ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), SBS (Special Broadcasting Service) and NITV (National Indigenous Television).
ABC broadcasts nationwide and displays usual programs like the news, sports and entertainment shows.
SBS is founded by the government in order to provide the non-English speaking Australian residents with programs in their own language. The foreign movies are transmitted in original language with English subtitles at SBS. Nowadays, Pay TV channels took over this duty and are more popular among the TV audience. Using Pay TV the non-English speaking audience found the chance to watch the TV channels from own country and own language. Nevertheless, SBS still broadcasts many TV programs, documentaries and movies in numerous community languages of Australia.
NITV is based in Alice Springs and has a television arm in Sydney. It is on air since 2005 and has been transmitting using the satellites of Imparja Television. A big part of the outback can receive NITV transmissions.
Furthermore, there are 3 private channels in Australia: Seven Network, Nine Network and Network Ten. The availability of these networks is limited at some places but all of the capital cities can receive the transmissions.
ABC and SBS also have radio channels where SBS follows its multicultural policy in radio programs as well. It is possible to listen to many non-English language radio programs.
