The White Settlement on Australia
First, Captain Cook encouraged settling down in Australia. At that time, England was looking for a new place to accumulate the prisoners. Previously, the prisoners were being sent to North America. With the discovery of Australia, England came up with the idea of transporting the prisoners there and using them as cheap work force. Due to this reason, the first whites, who have been sent to the island, were the prisoners. The first independent people immigrated to Australia many years later.
The prisoner transportation to Australia started with the 'first fleet' in 1788. The first fleet arrived at Botany Bay near Sydney and consisted of 11 ships. In this way, around 1000 people (740 prisoners) were transported to the island. The first independent people, 5 men and 2 families, arrived at Australia in 1793. During the following 10 years, several small groups also immigrated to Australia and settled down there. These immigrants were offered free ship trip as well as free work force, which was the prisoners. And the prisoners were given the right to be free once their punishment was over. In the meanwhile, British Empire encouraged the wealthy people to move to Australia in many ways. During the exploration of the island, Brisbane River, today's South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania have been discovered. In order to maintain the expansion of the colony in the direction of the new discovered areas, many companies paid for the ship trip for more than 10.000 people within 4 years. After everything was stabilized, the new immigrants had to pay for their own trips.
