King's Park & Botanic Gardens
King's Park and Botanic Gardens are combined in 400 hectares just a short stroll away from the city centre. Since it is located a bit uphill, on Mount Eliza, it offers a magnificent panaroma of Swan River and Perth City. The park is one of the best view points over Perth. A natural observation deck... In fact, it has been adorned by 2,000 Western Australian regional flora species. Truely splendid!
Although King's Park and Botanic Gardens occupy 400 hectares, only around 50 hectares are specially organized for the visitors. This part is pretty close to the city centre. For adventure lovers, there is always the possibility to discover the park deeper but this requires either walking for a long time or public transport. Nevertheless, the common area has more than enough to explore. In addition to magnificent city and river views, numerous walkways, playgrounds and picnic facilities attract especially families for entertainment. The State War Memorial Precinct is a must-see. It exhibits one of the most important pages of Australian history.
Burn your lunch, climbing on DNA Tower! No need to describe... Once you see it, you'll easily recognize because it really looks like the DNA double-helix molecule. The tower is the highest point in the park and it takes 101 steps to reach to the top. Another energy requiring activity would be climbing Kokoda Walk Track. During the walk, a height of 62m is to be achieved in 150 steps! Though! For more guidance, take the advantage of free walk, offered by volunteers. They are happy to share their time and knowledge!
By the way, on the long weekend of Queen's birthday, in late September, King's Park hosts Wildflower Festival. You will be impressed, watching the blooming wildflowers. This festival is one of the most important events in Perth so if you are in Perth at that time, don't miss it... You won't regret.
King's Park and Botanic Gardens are located very close to Perth CBD. A 1.5km convenient walk ends up there.
