Mitchell Falls
The breathtaking Mitchell Falls are the most spectacular part of Mitchell Plateau. Four majestic waterfalls are chained on each other with tempting rock pools in between. And the good news! Swimming is allowed both in the rock pools and in the river. In fact, numerous visitors prefer the crystal clear waters of Mertens Falls for a bit of relaxing. Once recharged with enough energy, continue to explore. There is more to discover. Can you imagine yourself taking a walk among so many Livistonia palms anywhere else in Kimberleys? Livistonia palms show up every now and then in the region but remember that Mitchell Plateau was a rainforest in the past. So the flora in the ambiance is pursuant. Having been in Kimberleys but missing this amazing scene is a real loss!

Nevertheless, being the lucky person to be a part of this atmosphere is demanding. Getting to the destination is a real outback adventure. But you can be sure that gain will be more than the pain! The nearest town to Mitchell Plateau is Kununurra and is around 300km away. This distance can be covered in roughly 15 hours. It is practically impossible to succeed within one day. Since the only path to this nature paradise is Gibb River Road, you definitely need a 4WD. Rentals as well as numerous package tours can be found at Kununurra. Once you are at the car park in the pleteau, leave the car and head to the walk trail. The path to the falls is over 5km one way. Keep in mind that you will have to walk this distance all the way back as well so take it easy, making stops whenever necessary and enjoy every minute.
A less strenuous way to see the waterfalls is taking a plane or helicopter from Kununurra and documenting this exciting experience with a number of photos, showing the bird's eye view of the whole beauty. Although highly isolated, Mitchell Pleteau turned to be so attractive that temporary helicopter tours are available during the high season. In fact, some helicopters do not have any doors. Step on one and make a lifetime experience!
Mitchell Pleteau has limited accommodation possibilities. The one, everyone can use, is the wilderness camping where toilets are supplied but nothing more. Start an extraordinary day with a relaxing bath in the river and make sure that you have enough food and necessary stuff until the end of your visit.
Shortly Mitchell Pleteau is huge and rich on impressing sights. Getting there takes easily 2 days and a recommended period of stay in the area would be at least two or three days. It is not possible to access the region from November to May (during wet season) but during the rest of the year, the pleteau is looking forward to welcoming the visitors.
