Lake Argyle

Lake Argyle, WALake Argyle is the second largest man made lake in Australia. It was created as a result of the dam construction on Ord River. Its average size is around 1000km2 and this can extend up to over 2000km2 during the wet season with the help of flood. The lake is as deep as 30m at some spots.

After Lake Argyle was created, amazing miracles of the nature led the lake develop an ecosystem of its own. Nowadays, this "dam lake" has 70 islands! Can you believe? These islands are nothing more than the highest parts of the ranges that used to be in the area before the dam was built. Today, they are home to a variety of native marsupials and reptiles. The lake also contains 26 species of native fish and even freshwater crocodiles (around 25,000 of them) since commercial aquaculture industry is developed with the support of Department of Fisheries, Western Australia.

A number of different cruises depart from Lake Argyle Tourist Village everyday. Drop by to this magnificent village overlooking the lake and, amazed with the scenery, decide if you prefer to explore Lake Argyle, enjoying your morning tea or cooling down with an Australian beer/wine at lunch time or in the romantic ambiance of sunset!

Lake Argyle Tourist Village is just 70km southeast of Kununurra and the lake is within 1.5-2km distance from the village. The village is conveniently accessable by a 35km sealed road after leaving the highway.
