Busselton Jetty and Underwater Observatory
This 140-year-old and 1841m long wooden jetty leads the visitors to a unique environment, the greatest artificial reef in Australia. The reef is home to over 300 marine species. Tropical and subtropical corals, sponges and fish create a truly fascinating scene. The region owes its beauty to Leeuwin Current. Leeuwin Current flows through the coastline during autumn and winter, and brings warm water that works as a magic stick for coral life. This makes the southern coast of Australia unique in southern hemisphere where coral growth takes place even at a lattitude of 33 degrees south while in Africa and South America no coral growth occurs below 5 degrees south.
Now the good news! It is possible to observe Busselton Jetty artificial reef simply diving into it without even getting wet. The jetty ends up at Underwater Observatory located ~1.8km away from the coast. As you climb down the stairs, you will find yourself 8 meters below the sea level among fish and the corals. You won't be able to stop yourself from looking at them! Please remember that Underwater Observatory was established in 2003 and previously, only divers could enjoy this magnificent atmosphere. Nevertheless, the observatory didn't decrease the divers' interest to the region. Furthermore, fishing both on Busselton Jetty and on the beaches is also very popular as the area is rich of herring, snapper, whiting or tailor. By the way, please keep your camera with you at all times. Busselton Jetty, Underwater Observatory and the surrounding beaches offer great shots as the best document of your unforgettable vacation memories.
Busselton Jetty and Underwater Observatory are located just 2.5 hours of drive from Perth, close to Margaret River and the surrounding capes. Jetty can be accessed 24 hours a day. The opening and closing times of the observatory change depending on the time of the year. However, it is open everyday except Christmas Day as long as the weather permits.
