Devonian Reef National Parks

Geike Gorge National Park, WADevonian Reef National Parks consist of three national parks, namely Windjana Gorge, Geike Gorge and Tunnel Creek. The whole system is used to be the western part of Great Barrier Reef (previously called as Western Australian Reef) during Devonian Period, 350 million years ago, as a tropical sea was situated in the region. Today, the sea left its place to magnificent gorges, creeks and a stunning landscape.

Tunnel Creek National Park is one of the most popular of these parks and is famous of its ancient caves. The creek itself flows from one side of Napier Range to another through a tunnel. Take a walk through this 750m tunnel... You'll be surprised to see permanent pools on the way and Aboriginal art on the walls. The pools are occupied by freshwater crocodiles and 5 different bat species that live in the cave, showing off from time to time. Watch out for the stalactites as they can hang pretty close to the ground. It is very easy to get wet and cold in the cave so appropriate clothing is necessary and a torch is a must.

Geikie Gorge National Park features unparalleled Geikie Gorge with gorgeous views of 30m high walls with fabulous colors, causing sparkling reflections on the water. The underwater life is also worth to mention. Freshwater stingrays and fish are abundant. But the most salient species are freshwater crocodiles. They are not known to be aggressive against humans unless they are disturbed. Since a part of the park is declared as sanctuary, the walking tracks are limited to a certain area between the west bank at the southern boundary of the park and the beginning of the west wall of the gorge.

Windjana George National Park is another spectacular gorge in Devonian Reef National Parks with over 100m high walls at some locations. Lennard River flows surrounding the gorge during the wet season and forms several seperate pools during the dry. A 3.5km walking track is available where local flora and fauna as well as fossils inside the gorge walls can be seen.

Fitzroy Crossing, WAAll of these parks are relatively near Derby and the best base to explore all of the national parks is Fitzroy Crossing. Geikie Gorge National Park is pretty close to Fitzroy Crossing and all the way from the crossing to the Gorge is sealed. Tunnel Creek National Park is 115 kilometres from Fitzroy Crossing and although two wheel drive can do the work depending on the season, four wheel drive would be safer. Windjana George National Park is only 30km away from Tunnel Creek National Park and 150 kilometres from Fitzroy Crossing. Unsealed road is a part of the path and two wheel drive can be suitable only depending on the season.

The entry to the parks is limited during the wet season (from December to March) since Fitzroy River floods. Good planning is required.
