Abrolhos Islands

Houtman Abrolhos (Abrolhos Islands in public language) is a chain of 122 stunning islands that can be mainly classified in three groups. These are known as Wallabi, Easter and Pelsaert. The length of this chain is around 100km and this ecosystem is the southernmost coral reef in the world. Thanks to Leeuwin Current, flows southwards and brings tropical warm water to Western Australia's coast from the surroundings of Indonesia, the ocean temperature remains at around 20-22 degrees even during winter. And guess what... Corals and tropical fish love this! Therefore, it is possible to meet diverse species in the area where they normally could not have resided. Manta rays, sea lions and dolphins are also a part of this charming ambiance.

The environment surrounding Abrolhos Islands is rich of shipwrecks. Almost 20 wrecks have been discovered in the region. Batavia, wrecked in 1629, is the most famous one. Please put on your snorkel or diving equipment and make an inspection down there. You will make an unforgettable experience! There are also surfing and windsurfing possibilities.

In addition to underwater fauna, Abrolhos Islands offer amazing animal watching opportunities. Did you know that more than 90 seabird species live on the islands? And 25 different type of reptiles... If you are interested in learning more about the vegetation, please also keep in mind that the islands are home to over 140 native flora species, some of which are very sensitive to disturbance and are very well protected.

Abrolhos Islands are located 60km west of Geralton. The easiest way to get there is taking a plane to Geralton Domestic Airport. Another option would be driving through the highway all the way to the north from Perth. There are guided ship tours from Geralton to the Islands. Please note that staying overnight on the islands is not allowed. Those who travel by ship usually spend the night on board.
