Melbourne Zoo

Melbourne Zoo, Royal Melbourne Zoological Gardens, is home to a fine collection of over 300 native and exotic species. Since the zoo is reorganized considering the acclimatization needs of the exotics, currently most of the zoo inhabitants reside in three bioclimatic zones. Asian and African Rainforests, and Australian Bush... Each of these zones contain local species of the relevant regions. Tigers, jaguars, leopards, elefants, orang-utans, kangaroos, koalas, emus and many more... Three continents' wildlife is just a stone's throw away!

Can you distinguish a leopard from a jaguar? Interested in learning more about big cat species? Or looking forward to coming face to face with a lion? Or having a close look at Syrian brown bears? Melbourne Zoo gives a great chance to go behind the scenes and discover the animal world from the trainers' point of view. You can learn a lot, listening to the extensive information from the accompanying trainers while closing-up the animals, a real lifetime experience!

Melbourne Zoo makes a successful collaboration with "Friends of the Zoo" volunteer guides and offers free guided tours to everyone interested. The guides are being trained intensively to give more than satisfactory answers to the questions so the more you ask, the more you learn and, of course, the more you get impressed! It is recommended to pre-book these guided tours in case of big group trips.

By the way, have you already arranged an accommodation to stay overnight? Did you know that you can put a tent in the zoo and attend to a Roar'n'Snore event in the Elefant House? Again with a camp host, of course, who will tell you amazing stories the whole evening. You won't believe your ears... If you prefer more comfort, make a Slumber Safari in luxurious safari tents, an award winning four star accommodation.

Melbourne Zoo welcomes visitors everyday between 9am and 5pm. During the Twilight concerts, the zoo closes at 7.30pm and for those who have concert tickets, the animals are displayed until 9.30pm. The zoo is located only 4km away from the city centre and can be accessed by train (Royal Park Station) as well as by tram.
