Strahan

Strahan is established on the coast of Macquarie Harbour which is connected to Southern Ocean through narrow Hells Gate. Both Strahan Village and its surroundings are inconceivably stunning to say the least. It is a unique destination where you can make the wilderness experience of your life within one day.

The region first got attention due to the copper mines at the inland in Queensland. Initially a 35km railway has been built for transportation purposes between Strahan and Queensland. Today, West Coast Wilderness Railway offers a great trip to the history of the mining town in a lovely steam train. As the train proceeds on its journey through the wild life, you will feel yourself as if you were in a time machine.

Gordon River is just within a short distance from Strahan and it is another path to the heart of the nature and history. Take a cruise through the rainforest. The fabulous reflections of the surrounding hills over crystal clear waters of the river will take your breath away. Please keep in mind that what makes this rainforest especially unrivaled is the ancient plants over 2000 years old that have witnessed the history of Strahan. Take a scenic flight or a helicopter tour on Gordon River for a bird's eye view of the rainforest.

Sarah Island is another attraction in Strahan. It was previously used as a prison but was emptied by time. It is still possible to have a look at the ruins of the previously used buildings. Visit Ocean Beach as well if you have time. The beach is 40km long and spectacular. By the way, it is also the ideal place to observe the behavioral difference of water between the both sides of Hells Gate. The waves are harsh and huge, and the wind is very strong.

Strahan is around 300km northwest of Hobart. The road passes through the national park, crossing Derwent Bridge. Launceston is also approximately 280km away from Strahan and Cradle Mountain & Lake St. Claire National Park is more or less on the way.
