King Island

King Island is one of the two big islands in Bass Strait. The biggest town on the island is Currie and has hardly over 1000 inhabitants. This makes it a truly unique destination where one can relax excellently in the heart of the nature far away from crowds and chaos. Since the island is not that small (around 60km in length and 20km in width), it takes some time to discover the best surf beaches and most hidden locations.

King Island is famous of its dairies that produce some of the most delicious cheeses, creams and butters in Australia. There are a couple of such dairies that offer cheese-tasting tours. If the path to your heart passes through your stomach, this is a great option to start to the day for you.

One of the most popular activities on King Island is surfing. The unoccupied beaches are extremely inviting for surfers but most of them are more suitable for experienced surfers as a result of strong winds and instable water conditions King Island shores. It is also this instability that caused over 60 ships to be wrecked in the waters around the island until today. These wrecks, that became home to an amazing underwater world, are perfect destinations for the divers. Several lighthouses have been built around King Island in order to prevent any more ships from getting wrecked and this target could be partly achieved. Today, Currie Lighthouse and Cape Wickham Lighthouse are the most renowned ones and are open to the visitors. Dropping by to one of them would be very educative.

Did you know that Grassy, on the east coast of King Island, is home to natural penguin rookeries? As an alternative to Phillip Island and Diamond Island, you can view the penguins at Grassy as they return from their hunting journey. Furthermore, tours can be taken to see seals and sea elephants in the surroundings. But the best option is surely taking a scenic flight from King Island Airport and enjoying the magnificent bird's eye view of this oasis.

There is a variety of accommodation available on King Island from hostels to hotels.

King Island is located around 80km north east of Tasmania. The island can be best accessed by scheduled flights from some Victorian Airports as well as from Tasmania.
