Shot Tower
Shot Tower has a very interesting story. It was built in 1870 to produce lead shot. The way to achieve this was simply dropping molten lead from the top of the tower to the bottom (into a water tank), letting it acquire the proper shape on the air and cool down rapidly. The height of Shot Tower is around 50m and the path from the bottom to the top is made up of around 300 steps. Once you make your way up, you will see that the gain is more than the pain. A spectacular bird's eye view of Hobart is waiting for you there. Look at the amazing waterfront view of this picturesque city, from Sullivan's Cove to Bruny Island, up to the horizon... You can even enjoy this spellbinding scene with a cup of tea at the tea rooms. No wonder that Shot Tower gets around 55,000 visitors every year. Don't miss any chance to make great shots of the scene, if you would like to have fabulous pictures of Hobart.
There is a small museum in Shot Tower where the visitors are informed about the history of the tower and lead shot production, if preferred, by well educated guides. Souvenir shop is also available, serving for every taste...
Shot Tower is located in Taroona, 10km south of Hobart city centre on Channel Highway. Although most of the visitors reach the tower by car, there is also public transport possibility. Metro Tasmania operates bus services (Taroona/Proctors Road service) that leave the guests pretty close to the tower.
Shot Tower welcomes the visitors from 9am to 5.30pm during the high season, between Boxing Day and Easter.
