Flinders Island

Bass Strait contains Furneaux island group which consists of over 50 islands. Flinders Island is the largest one. It is estimated that during Ice Age, Tasmania was connected to mainland Australia. Today it is a common belief that the higher points of this previous land connection turned into islands after the ice melted. Flinders Island is the most spectacular one of them.

Flinders Island has an amazing landscape and wildlife. The two mountains on the island, Mount Strzelecki and Mount Killiecrankie, are made of pink and grey granites which are absolutely stunning. Mount Strzelecki is the highest spot on the island with a height of 756m. Make your way to Mount Strzelecki Summit and enjoy the unrivaled vista. Relax in the crystal clear waters surrounding the island after this unforgettable bush walk. Flinders Island is one of the few locations in the world where you can probably have a complete beach just for yourself. The population is so low that an absolute peace and tranquillity dominates the daily life while the birds do a great job to cheer up everyone.

Birdlife on Flinders Island is truly fascinating. The island is a very popular destination for the migratory birds when they need to make a stop on their way. Therefore, it is possible to watch a wide variety of species. Apart from the birds, many other native animals can only be seen in Tasmania. The most renowned one is surely Tasmanian Devil. Although their number reduced significantly during the past years, they are still the super star and get the maximum attention. Furthermore, potoroos, wallabies, possums, wombats and many more can be seen while exploring the island. The waters, surrounding Flinders Island, are also home to seals, whales and dolphins. Simply rent a boat or take a daily tour to watch these lovely animals.

Diverse accommodation possibilities are available at Flinders Island from camping places to cottages. Especially for a vacation during school holidays, making an early reservation is a must.

Flinders Island can be accessed both from Launceston and Victoria by plane. Please note that there are limited daily flights. Therefore, it is wise to book the flight well in advance.
