Cradle Mountain National Park
Cradle Mountain and Lake St. Clair National Park is the 161,000 hectares part of Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area which also includes Mount Ossa (the highest mountain in Tasmania). Cradle Mountain is located at the northern end of the park and Lake St Clair at the southern end. World wide renowned "Overland Track" connects these two wonders of the nature to each other.
Overland Track is a 65km long bushwalk that takes around 6 days when taken easy. It starts from Cradle Valley and continues until Lake St Clair through an amazing path which displays the most unforgettables of Australian wildlife and nature. The path is very well marked so if you are fit enough, you can give a go to the adventure of your life. Or do you feel a bit nervous about carrying on the complete walk alone? Perhaps, you just need a travel mate. There are a couple of tours available in Cradle Mountain National Park that are led by experienced guides.
Finding an accommodation during the tour may be a problem depending on the season. There are many cabins available on the way but they get full pretty quickly as the number of visitors increase. Therefore, it is wise to carry a tent and some camping equipment with. Fuel stoves are one of the most important equipments as camping fires are strictly forbidden in the national park. The weather in Tasmania can also get pretty wet and windy all year around so good clothing, suitable to every weather condition, is one of the musts.
Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park has a stunning flora. Alpine plants dominate the national park so you have good chances of getting impressed.
Lake St Clair is one of the several lakes in Cradle Mountain National Park. It is not only gorgeous but also the surroundings are home to an amazing wildlife. Cynthia Bay is a very popular destination where there is something attractive for everyone. In fact, it is a very good locatoion for bird watching. Guided walks are available in the area in summer.
There are a few walking tracks available in Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park and not all of them take 6 days. The shortest one is Enchanted Walk and continues for just 20 minutes passing through a rainforest during a part of the way. The longest day tour heads for Cradle Mountain Summit and continues for roughly 8 hours. If you feel like you can do it, the panorama from the summit will surely be the best present once you are at the top. There are some more hiking paths if you have enough time.
There are a variety of accommodations available in Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park but during the high season the desired one must be booked.
Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park can be accessed from two directions. There are some roads ending up at Cradle Valley to the north or Derwent Bridge leads to Lake St Clair which makes it practical to travel by car. Alternatively, there are some coach companies that offer daily trips to Cradle Valley, Dove Lake, Cynthia Bay and Derwent Bridge.
