Bicheno

Bicheno is a unique destination which brings together numerous attractions for every taste. In fact, it also provides great alternatives to some of the most popular highlights of Australian mainland.

Did you know that you can see fairy penguins (also known as little penguins) in Bicheno area? Just make your way to Diamond Island Nature Reserve. Many of these cute and cuddly friendlies come back to their homes after a long day of hunting. Be there at dusk and welcome as many as you can. Diamond Island is just 300-400m away from Bicheno coast. During low tide, you can get there simply on foot. Due to this rare experience, Diamond Island is the best alternative to Phillip Island if your route does not cover Melbourne.

Freycinet National Park is just 40km away from Bicheno. It is a great day trip to the heart of untouched nature. Take a car and spend a couple of hours to explore the peninsula up to the most hidden beauties. Make a stop at Friendly Beaches on the way for an unforgettable swimming opportunity.

East Coast Birdlife and Animal Park contains numerous members of Tasmanian Wildlife. See Tasmanian devil and many others all together within one park. You can also spend some time at Douglas Apsley National Park for even more nature. Gorges, waterfalls and a magnificent rainforest. A dry eucalypt forest is the most impressive highlight from flora point of view. The landscape is also that unrivaled to say the least. There are several walking paths to investigate this paradise further which are of different difficulty and duration. Apsley Waterhole is not only an attraction of its own but also is the starting point for some tracks. The shortest is Lookout Track which takes 15-20 minutes. For such an easy track, the panorama is really awarding. You'll feel yourself like in the centre of a spellbinding postcard that extends up to the horizon. There is also Apsley Gorge Track that takes around 4 hours return. If you select Thompsons Marshes as starting point instead, you can also get to fabulous Heritage and Leeaberra Falls but it is at least one full day of walk. Overnighting is recommended for some of the tracks.

Have you ever been in Kiama? Maybe you have heard about the blowhole there. There is also a blowhole in Bicheno which can blow the water pretty high during high tide. Keep in mind to put some distance since you might get wet depending on the weather conditions. A very interesting rock formation, Rocking Rock, is also situated near the blowhole.

Bicheno is situated approximately 160km to the south east of Launceston and 180km to the north of Hobart. Freycinet National Park is just 40km south. The best way to get to Bicheno is obtaining a car.
