Adelaide
Founded in 1836 and named after Queen Adelaide, the consort of King William IV, Adelaide has been the capital city of initially the only freely-settled British Province and today the complete state of South Australia. During foundation phase, Adelaide has been designed by Colonel William Light, based on a brilliant grid structure that has been a paradigm to numerous metropolis planners even in 20th century. From city planning point of view, Adelaide has been unique in having had large boulvards and multilane streets since its earliest days.
Currently Adelaide is the fifth largest city in Australia and is home to over 1.1 million people from all over the world, starring as one of the most successful represantatives of multiculturalism. The city is located at a magnificent location on Adelaide Plains, near Torrens River, on the coast of Gulf St. Vincent. Outdoor entertainment opportunities are unlimited for every taste. Adelaide's umpteen beaches are very close to the city centre and very easy to access. The mountains in the surroundings are ideal for bushwalking and hiking. The award for the effort is a fabulous panorama, a real feast for the eyes and sprit.
Adelaide is famous of being a festival city where the proud South Australian wineries give a great support. Well, South Australian wine (especially from Barossa Valley) is world wide renowned. With a lucky time schedule, you can enjoy Barossa Vintage Festival, the largest wine festival in Australia, that is held every second year (odd-numbered years).
