Brampton Island
Brampton Island is around 30km north of Mackay and is great for those who seek a peaceful environment in the heart of the nature.
The highest point on Brampton Island is 242m above the sea level and the peak lookouts offer a breathtaking view over the surrounding islands and the reef. Moreover, the 7km walking circuit can be used to experience the maximum out of the island. Both the flora and the fauna of the island are very attractive. Birdwatching is one alternative and turtle watching is another one if you spend some time on the island in summer. However, the most interesting highlight of Brampton Island is the channel that becomes suitable to walk through during the low tide and leads to Carlisle Island in the neighborhood.
Camping is allowed on both islands but it is wise to be self-sufficient from food and water point of view. A more luxury accommodation is also available, namely Brampton Island Resort.
Regular flights are available to Brampton Island from almost all Australian capital cities via Mackay. Direct flights to/from Brampton are available both from Mackay and Hamilton Island. Alternatively, there are boat transfers from Mackay Marina that arrive in Brampton Island in less than 1,5 hours. Mackay Marina is around half an hour of driving distance from Mackay Airport.
