Litchfield National Park

Litchfield National Park is established on 1,500 square kilometers and it is one of the most beautiful national parks in Australia. Spectacular waterfalls meet spellbinding rock pools thundering down the cascades, creating an amazing vista. Walks through bush and monsoon vine forests are like a live biology lecture, even kids would love to attend. And the magnetic termite mounds of course... One of the true miracles, the nature proudly displays...

There are a few major waterfalls in Litchfield National Park. They all end up at rock pools which are tempting for a swim at all times. Make your way to the lookout to make great shots of Florence Falls. The stairs down lead to the plunge pool if you are after taking a cool bath. Tolmer Falls is another destination of the same style with a rock pool at the bottom. Buley Rockhole is a bit different than the others. It consists of a number of cascaded pools which offer swimming possibilities almost all year around since they are spring fed. However, if you are also planning to suppress your hunger during a fabulous picnic, Wangi Falls is the best option. In addition to the pool that is known to be one of the best places for swimming in Litchfield National Park, Wangi Falls also features picnic spots for every hunger.

There are several walking tracks in Litchfield National Park. The length of the walks change between 15 minutes and 5 days. If you climb up to the top of the waterfalls, you can take a fascinating walk through monsoon vine forest. The departure point of the walks are usually near Florence Falls and Walker Creek.

The most unique feature of Litchfield National Park is magnetic termit mounds. The genious structure of the mounds can easily make many architects jealous. They are aligned north to south to optimize the effect of the sunlight. The narrow sides face the sun during summer minimizing the exposure to the sun while the sunlight hits on the wide surface of the mound during winter in order to heat it up properly inside. They are surely one of the most attractive highlights in Litchfield National Park.
