Kings Canyon
Watarrka National Park is established on an area of over 70,000 hectares. The most renowned highlight in the park is surely Kings Canyon. If you have enough time, give a chance to Kathleen Springs as well which is located 20km away from Kings Canyon on the other side of Watarrka National Park.
Kings Canyon consists of remarkable rock formations and waterholes that are over 400 million years old. This stunning masterpiece of the nature shows off with its rock holes, gorges, 600 species of fauna and, last but not the least, the waterhole which reminds an oasis. Depending on the amount of time you have and you fitness level, you can select among a variety of walking tracks. The easiest one is Creek Walk. It is slightly above 2,5km long and takes about an hour to complete the track. It leads to Kings Creek Lookout which offers a fascinating vista over the canyon. Kings Canyon Rim Walk, on the other hand, is a tougher walk that can take approximately 4 hours. However, if you have time, it is the ideal way to get to Garden of Eden and to the domes of the Lost City.
Garden of Eden is a group of palm trees and tropical plants that surround a waterhole. You should see this beauty to be able to truely appreciate it. The Lost City is another interesting part of Kings Canyon. It is the remainings of an ancient city which displays especially astonishing views during sunrise and sunset. Both of these sites can be accessed by Kings Canyon Rim Walk. It is safe to keep in mind that the track should be walked only by experienced walkers with high fitness level in clockwise direction.
For those who want to see the maximum in the shortest possible time, numerous scenic flights are available by helicopter.
Kathleen Springs are around 20km to the east of Kings Canyon and are equally spectacular. They are a part of Kathleen Gorge which can be discovered during a 2,6km walk within 1,5 hours. Guiding signs also do a great work to inform the visitors about the Aboriginal background of the surroundings. It is a great place to enjoy tranquillity.
There are some accommodation possibilities at Kings Canyon. Kings Canyon Resort alone provides numerous options for every budget. Please keep in mind that camping is not allowed in Watarrka National Park. The best time to visit the area is during winter months (from April to September) when it is cooler than the rest of the year.
