Mary River Area and Jim Jim Area
The southern half of Kakadu National Park is like a paradise. Some parts are accessable only by 4WD while scenic flights can be taken to not to miss any sight.
The most amazing highlights at the south of Kakadu National Park are surely the waterfalls. Gunlom Falls are situated in Mary River Area and they flow down along cascaded rocks into a stunning plunge pool. Another track that leads to a plunge pool is Maguk Plunge Pool Walk. Although plunge pools are very attractive, swimming is on own risk and crocodile signs should be taken into account.
Another spectacular waterfall is Jim Jim Falls. Unfortunately they are located exactly at the area which can only be accessed during the dry season. In fact, only by 4WD. Jim Jim Falls also flow into a magnificent plunge pool. Both the falls and the pool can be accessed by Jim Jim Falls Plunge Pool Walking Track which is a relatively difficult 2km walk and takes around 1,5 hours. Please keep in mind that it is very dangerous to swim in the pool as there is a high risiko of crocodile presence.
The most convenient way to enjoy Jim Jim Falls is simply taking a scenic flight and enjoying the view during the wet season when the falls run full. Otherwise, several walks can be taken to get to the falls as close as possible. However, none of these walks can be called easy.
