East & South Alligator Areas and Jabiru

The northern part of Kakadu National Park hosts 3 spectacular areas. The surroundings of Alligator Rivers Region, namely East Alligator Area and South Alligator Area, and Jabiru Area are inviting for memories that will last forever

The best starting point for a great Kakadu tour is Jabiru. Jabiru is a small lovely town where any necessary shop can be found from chemist to hairdresser. Bowali Visitor Centre is aslo located here. The best clues about what to see and where to go can be obtained while getting informed about the accommodation possibilities in the national park. There are two walking tracks that start from Jabiru both of which are open only during the dry season. In fact, one of the tracks is perfect for suitable bicycles. Bowali Bike and Walking Track is 4km long and if you take it easy on foot, you can finish it within 40 minutes. Another one is called Iligadjarr Walking Track and is 3,8km. The walk mainly continues along Burdulba Billabong. Although it is also a moderate walk, going through the complete circuit takes approximately 2 hours. Just make sure that you have enough time. If you are in a hurry, you can take a scenic flight to get the best overview of Kakadu National Park down to Jim Jim Falls.

The region around Alligator River Systems is divided into two main areas.

The main highlight in South Alligator Area is Mamukala wetlands which is home to a wide variety of birdlife that can impress even the most well informed birdwatchers. Observation platform is like a meeting point for bird fans. Furthermore, a dry season walking track is also designated for the same purpose. Go for a walk if you feel bored from standing still. You can experience even more while proceeding through the 3km walking track. It is an easy walk that takes approximately 2 hours depending on your speed. During the dry season, the 1km track through the monsoon forest and woodlands (Gungarre Walking Track) is a very good alternative. It is around 3,6km long and also takes 2 hours. Moreover, South Alligator Area has some remote areas that are accessible only during the dry season. Please note that 4WD is needed to get to Two Mile Hole, Four Mile Hole and West Alligator River where camping areas can be found.

East Alligator Area attracts mostly those, who are after the best of Aboriginal Rock Art. The main highlights in the area are Ubirr Rock Art Site and the walking tracks along East Alligator River. There are three main art sites in Ubirr Rock Art Site each of which has a different story. There is a 1km circular walking path along which all sites can be viewed. It is just an hour of walk and if you climb up to the lookout as well, you will be stunned by the breathtaking vista of Nardab floodplain. It is a pity that Ubirr can be accessed only during the dry season. Sandstone and River Walk is an alternative track which is also available only during the dry. It basically continues along East Alligator River. The best thing with East Alligator Area is, river cruises run during both wet and dry season. Watch the crocodiles from just metres away while sliding through an area of outstanding natural beauty with the soothing songs of the birds at the background. Keep in mind that river cruises take place on Magela Creek during wet season and on East Alligator River during the dry.

The first stop once you enter the park, Jabiru, is situated around 3 hours drive from Darwin. Please remember that the access to Kakadu National Park can be temporarily blocked during wet season.
