Territory Wildlife Park
Territory Wildlife Park is located at around 50km on the south of Darwin and exposes three different habitats. Remember that the park offers tons of opportunities to make fantastic photos.
Make a round through the whole park and visit Wetland, Monsoon Vine Forest and, last but not least, Woodland. Each habitat is a world of its own with astonishing flora and fauna. An unforgettable experience!
And for those who are not willing to walk, a free shuttle train is available that circulates between the attractions in around 20 minutes. Of course, going for a stroll through the park is the only way to not to miss anything.
Territory Wildlife Park is open every day except Christmas Day from 8.30am to 6.00pm (last entry at 4.00pm).
Wetland
Wetland contains creeks, springs and lagoons which swell dramatically during the wet season. During the dry season, this accumulated water allures many animals. Especially the birds... A hint for the photographers: At Goose Lagoon a bird-hide can be used to make some close-up photos of the inhabitants. The best time for bird watching here is from July to October. Other popular attractions at Wetland are Aquarium and Billabong.
Aquarium provides a fabulous insight into a typical Top End river. While walking through the underwater tunnel on the way to the aquarium, you will come face to face with fish like the famous barramundi, freshwater crocodiles and numerous turtle species. Being surrounded by all these animals, one interesting question rises. Who is sitting inside the aquarium? While thinking about the answer of this question, prepare yourself for the next attraction at the end of the tunnel, a saltwater crocodile!
Billabong is home to some pelicans and many other wild species. On a lucky day, you can see all of the four different freshwater turtle species that live here. Would you like to have some action? Then you should not miss Barramundi feeding. It usually takes place at 9am but don't forget to check the schedule, just to be on the safe side.
Monsoon Vine Forest
Maybe you have already seen an equatorial rainforest before. Monsoon Vine Forest at Territory Wildlife Park is quite different. A normal rainforest needs a lot of water all year around but in this region, the rainforest has to survive for six months without any rain due to the climate. Most animals live on the fruits that the rainforest provides.
Would you like to see the forest from the inhabitants' point of view? You can take the advantage of Monsoon Vine Forest Walk to visit them, make a spellbinding experience and maybe take some fantastic photos.
Woodland
Woodland can be found at everywhere at Top End of Northern Territory. The dominating Eucalyptus and Acacia grow here and are home to many animals. Water is rare during the dry season, and the flora and fauna are adapted to this condition.
During the day, it is hard to see any animals. Because of the high day temperature, most are night active. But Nocturnal House offers an alternative for those who would like to see some of common and rare animals of this region like mammals, reptiles, invertebrates, birds and amphibians.
