Royal Botanic Gardens and the Domain
Royal Botanic Gardens, the 30 hectar paradise in the heart of Sydney, provide a great relaxation opportunity and host many events all year around. Being located at one of the most spectacular spots in Sydney, Royal Botanic Gardens offer a beautiful environment for joggers and nature/picnic lovers. Here, it is possible to meet the locals of Australia like snakes, spiders, birds, mammals (flying foxes, possums...) and insects. Planning enough time for a walk among an outstanding collection of plants, originally from all over the world, is surely a "must do". If not enough energy for a walk, why not to enjoy a scenic tour with the trackless train?
One of the biggest points of interest in Royal Botanic Gardens is the opportunity to make a great shot of Opera House from Mrs. Macquaries Point while taking in spectacular harbour views. Sydney Tropical Centre also gets a lot of attention, not only due to its exotic stunning plants from all over the world but also due to its prismatic glass architecture which is known to be one of the first ones in the world. There are also many other buildings and structures in the gardens that are heritage listed due to their age and never reducing beauty. Besides, the fountains, monuments and memorials in the gardens generate a lovely background for your pictures.
The Domain, initially known as a buffer between the Governor's residence and the penal colony, surrounds Royal Botanic Gardens. Things that are not allowed in Royal Botanic Gardens like rollerblading, cycling, playing ball games etc. are allowed in the Domain. Several restaurant, cafe and kiosk options are available in the gardens as well as in the Domain to suppress hunger.
Royal Botanic Gardens have in total of 13 gates, 8 of which are suitable for disability access. The entrance to both the Domain and Royal Botanic Gardens are for free except special events. They are open everyday but the admittance to the gardens starts at 7am and the closing time changes between 5pm and 8pm depending on the time of the year. The gardens are only a stone-throw away from Circular Quay so they are easily accessible by public transport.
There are many guided tours available in the gardens, most of which are for free. Fees apply on group walks, Tropical Centre and scenic tour with the trackless train. Tourist Information is located at Palm Grove Centre and kindly provides detailed information about every available tour.
