Sydney Opera House

Sydney Opera HouseThe world-wide famous Australian icon, Sydney Opera House, is surely a must see for everyone. It is located at Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, close to the Harbour Bridge. Many tourists visit this architecture wonder, taking spectacular pictures together with the most popular Australian images.

Sydney Opera House was designed by Jorn Utzon, a Danish architect. The construction started in 1959 and Opera House was formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II on October 10th, 1973. The resulting unique and stunning structure is an expressionist modern design, well-known with its series of large precast concrete shells, that form the roofs. These shells are covered with splendid white and matte cream tiles that have a self-cleaning nature. The Opera House contains five theatres (Concert Hall, Opera Theatre, Drama Theatre, Playhouse and Studio Theatre), five rehearsal studios, two main halls, four restaurants, six bars and several souvenir shops. Many production companies perform their art here. The main ones are Opera Australia, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Sydney Theatre Company. You can enjoy in average of 3000 events that being are held at the Opera House each year.

By the way have you heard that Sydney Opera House is one of the 21 finalist candidates for the "new 7 wonders in the world" selection? Is it not amazing? If you get the chance to watch a live performance in this complex, don't miss it! If you are already too late for that, you still have a chance to get familiar with this beautiful structure by taking one or more of the numerous guided tours that are available.
