Sydney

Sydney... The most beautiful city in Australia!Sydney has a special place in Australian history. The first European settlers who came with "First Fleet", arrived in Sydney Cove on 26 January 1788 and founded the city around Port Jackson. Today, Sydney is the capital city of New South Wales and January 26th is being celebrated as Australia Day nationwide.

Being located at one of the few natural harbours in the world, Sydney turned to be the commercial capital pretty fast and started to get more and more attention. Following this, the population of the city increased rapidly. Nowadays, Sydney is home to over 4 million residents and is the most populated city in Australia. A very interesting point should be kept in mind! The population density in Sydney is one of the lowest compared to other capital cities in Australia (Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane) since the city is very large. After the establishment, special care was taken in order to bring a good public transport system to Sydney as early as possible. This made it possible for the workers to settle down further away from the city centre, relying on the public transport. Sydney is bordered with Blue Mountains on the west, Pacific Ocean on the east, Hawkesbury River on the north and Woronora Plateau on the south.

Sydney takes part at world-wide watched activities too. The city hosted British Empire Games in 1938, Summer Olympics in 2000 and Rugby World Cup in 2003.
