Snowy Mountains are located at Kosciuszko National Park. They are the highest part of Great Dividing Range which stretches from Victoria to Queensland. Mount Kosciuszko (2228m) is the peak of this mountain set. Although not so high, it is still ideal for snow sports, with an Alpine climate dominating from May to September. The skiing resorts are mainly located at Thredbo and Charlotte Pass.

Snowy Mountains have inherited a lot from the ice age. They are rich of glaciers. The highest lake in Australian mainland, Lake Cootapatamba, is a result of glacier formations remaining from that time. There are a couple of more lakes with glacial origins that are absolutely stunning to say the least. Discovering them requires a seperate visit in warmer months, when bushwalking is easier than skiing.

Go for bushwalking at Snowy Mountains in summer...Snowy Mountains is a destination full of fun all year around. Winter sports is just a seasonal part of the activities here. As it gets warm, the mountains change their appearance incredibly and allow bushwalking, horseback riding, rafting, waterskiing, climbing, mountain biking and a lot more... Water sports can be carried on Snowy, Murrumbidgee and Murray rivers with pleasure. The picturesque vista of the glacial lakes can be enjoyed on a horseback during bushwalking or while mountain biking. Several picnic places are also available. Go for trekking on Australian Alps Walking Track in order to experience more from Kosciuszko National Park. The track crosses through Australian national parks in New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and Victoria. Walking up the complete track takes around 8 weeks.

The plant consists of sixteen major dams, seven power stations (two underground), a pumping station, 145kms of interconnected transmountain tunnels and 80kms of aqueducts and has been recognized as one of the civil engineering wonders of the modern world. The construction of the facility took 25 years for more than 100,000 people from 30 countries.

Snowy Mountains are located around 500km southeast of Sydney and actually are much closer to Canberra. It is recommended to be cautious while driving at all times and it is a must to use snow chains during the winter months.
