Shoalhaven and Surroundings
Shoalhaven is the perfect base for exploring the south coast of New South Wales. This coastal line especially impresses with lovely cities, fantastic beaches and unique rock formations. Regardless of in which direction you drive, there is always some memorable sight on the way.
Kiama outstands as the centre of attractions. It is a relatively small city but has some unique spots to visit. Blow Hole for example... This hole "blows" the water up to 60m height when the sea runs from southeast. Some luck is necessary though, since the wind direction can not be guaranteed. Nevertheless, if the water show at Blow Hole can not be seen, there is still an alternative, "Little Blow Hole", where the water can climb pretty high as well. Little Blow Hole is visible from Blow Hole Lookout. Other popular rock formations are Cathedral Rocks and Bombo Headland. Take your camera and make your way among splendid sights.
Shell Harbour is a little town on the north of Kiama and Bass Point is one of the most popular places in Shell Harbour. Especially the divers and snorkellers prefer spending their weekends here, observing the underwater world and rock formations in the crystal clear water.
Have you ever jogged, surfed, fished or simply lazied on a golden beach that continues for seven miles? Seven Miles Beach National Park is the gateway to Seven Miles Beach, where one can enjoy being on a beach, bordered by the ocean at the front and the green hinterland at the back. Sounds like heaven but it is an Australian reality. Furthermore, inside the national park, there are several Aussie species. A precious collection of Australian birds. Nan Tien Temple is a destination for observing another culture or practicing Buddhist religion. It is located on the way to Berkeley. Did you know that it is the largest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere? Interesting ceremonies can be watched here all year around, especially before special events. No need to mention that Nan Tien Temple is the ideal place to celebrate Chinese new year.
Shoalhaven is around 155km south of Sydney. A visit to the region can easily be stretched over more than a day since varieties of accommodation is available at most of the popular spots.
