Port Stephens

Port Stephens, 3 hours drive from SydneyPort Stephens is renowned for its 160 resident bottlenose dolphins and also numerous migrant whales, that come very close to the coast, on the way to their winter and summer domiciles. Take a cruise and meet the friendly dolphins whenever you wish all year around. But the whales can only be seen from May to July and from September to November. Furthermore, the crystal clear waters, washing 26 golden sandy beaches, arouse a great interest to discover the hidden beauties of Port Stephens as well. Imagine how magnificent it can be under the water, if it is spellbinding already above! Put on your snorkelling/diving gears on and see it yourself...

Port Stephens can only be called "rich" from beaches point of view. Each of its beaches is more amazing than the others. But one of them definitely deserves being counted as one of the Seven Wonders in the World...

Port Stephens and the sand dunes...Stockton Beach is 32km long. Not only its length but also its sand dunes attract the visitors from all over the world. Drive up and down the dunes with a 4WD or -even better- 6WD. Or rent a quad bike instead... Have you ever tried sand dune surfing? Just keep in mind that the bottom-end of the, around 30m high, path is the ocean Smiley For those who are more into enjoying the dunes taking their time to observe it around, camel rides are also available. Another beloved option is fishing on the bay. Having the desert behind and the ocean in front of yourself, you can make a lifetime experience. All of these tours depart from Anna Bay and Lavis Lane entrances. The meeting points on both entrances can be accessed with 4WD, while Anna Bay entrance is also suitable for on foot access.

Apart from the ocean and the beaches, Port Stephens offers many bushwalking possibilities. Marine and national parks are very popular destinations as well as the lakes and islands. Relaxing in the nature for a day at Myall Lakes National Park, walking among the koalas in their natural environment at Tilligerry Peninsula and hiking on Broughton Island through cliffs, caves and springs make the visitors wish that they could stop the time.

Port Stephens is located around 200km north of Sydney and normally it takes less than 3 hours drive to get there. If you wish to travel by plane, Newcastle Airport is the nearest. Buses are available both from Newcastle train station and from Sydney city centre.
