Lord Howe Island
Lord Howe Island is a part of Lord Howe Island Group together with Admiralty Islands, Mutton Bird Islands, Ball's Pyramid. It is surrounded with the southern most coral reef in the world. The spellbinding beauty of this nature paradise has been admitted by UNESCO as well. Lord Howe Island Group is World Heritage listed since 1982. Once you visit Lord Howe Island, you can see why!
Lord Howe Island mainly consists of rainforests, mountains and coral reef. The amount of people on the island is very low at all times. This has prevented the nature from getting spoiled. Rent a bike and discover it around. A splendid destination would be Mount Gower. Just keep in mind that it is one full day's tiring hiking. Mount Gower (875m) is the highest landmark on the island and offers a breathtaking vista. After you get stunned by bird's eye view of the vicinity, make your way down to the reef and explore the heaven from a different dimension. The underwater world is at least as fascinating as the landscape. Tropical
and subtropical fish, corals, turtles and the others exhibit themselves proudly, letting the snorkellers and the divers make a lifetime experience. By the way, have you ever hand-fed fish? As soon as the fish see the food, you will find yourself surrounded by a nimble rainbow, made of definitely more than 7 colors.
Lord Howe Island is ideal for silence and nature lovers. No public transport is available on the island but everywhere is more or less at walking distance. For further trips, a bicycle can always be hired.
Lord Howe Island is around 600km from both Sydney and Brisbane. Either an own sailing boat or a flight ticket is necessary to get there. Qantas has regular services to the island.
