Jervis Bay
Have you seen Leonardo Di Caprio movie, 'The Beach'? It could have been shot at Jervis Bay and its surroundings! The bay consists of many white sand beaches, surrounded with magnificent rivers and gorgeous national parks. The water is truly blue and crystal clear. Dolphins and whales drop by the coast every now and then, making the visitors feel like in a dreamworld.
Jervis Bay is bordered by Currambene State Forest on the north and Booderee National Park on the south. The arch, connects the state forest to Booderee National Park, is home to multiple small towns including Culburra Beach, Currarong, Callala Bay and Beach, Myola, Huskisson, Vincentia, Hyams Beach, Green Patch and of course Jervis Bay. Huskisson is the most important one for those who would like to spot some dolphins and whales in the surroundings. It is the centre for whale and dolphin watching cruises in addition to several other water activities that can be carried on, like kayaking, diving, sailing and fishing. Simply lazying on the beach is also a very popular option. Selecting one, among a wide choice of beaches, requires a lot more energy. Just a hint: Hyams Beach is renowned as the whitest sand beach in the world! It is located less than 10km away from Huskisson to the south.
Booderee National Park has a very rich fauna. It is ideal for bird watching, with over 180 bird species. Don't miss the white bellied sea eagle! It is even represented on the park logo. Guiding books are available at the park, to make the bird identification easier for the visitors. You can also opt for having a bird's view look at the park and the surroundings. Take Green Patch (a magnificent camping site offering amazing birdlife, sealife and a white sandy beach view at the same time) as base camp and follow the walking trails to Governor's Head. The scene is a great award for such a relatively short walk. If you walk back to north, you end up at Murrays Beach, which is as spectacular as Hyams Beach. Furthermore, Bristol Point, Telegraph Creek, Hole in the Wall, Scottish Rocks, St. Georges Head, Cave Beach, Bherwerre Beach and Wreck Bay are all within walking distance from Green Patch. The beaches in Booderee National Park are ideal for swimming and surfing as well as snorkelling and diving. Observe truly unique underwater beauties. You won't regret!
Bowen Island is located just on the opposite of Governor's Head. The flora and fauna on the island are beautiful. The flora mainly consists of banksia. Shearwaters, dolphins and little penguins can be viewed around. Unfortunately, the island itself is not open to public access but the glittering waters of Bowen Island is the first address for many "beginner" divers. A spectacular underwater world is waiting for the visitors just at maximum 12m depth.
Booderee National Park and Botanical Gardens also have a shore to St. Georges Basin. St. Georges Basin is a large lagoon with shallow waters popular for boating and fishing, in the middle of green. Follow Wool Road to the west, from the town of St. Georges Basin to Basin View, for the best views on the basin. Waterskiing, prawning, fishing and sailing activities are available in this township. Sanctuary Point, on the east of the town of St. Georges Basin, is a great place for more or less every water sport. Yachts, surf skis, rowboats, canoes and windsurfing equipment can be rented here. By the way, if you are a fishing expert, you can head for a gold medal at St Georges Basin Flathead Classic fishing competition in December.
Jervis Bay is located approximately 190km south of Sydney. It is a good idea to travel there and around with own car as the public transport facilities in the region is limited.
