Broken Hill
Broken Hill is the longest lived mining city in Australia. The action started in the region as the silver ore was first discovered in 1883 which led the population increase rapidly. Following the discovery of similar mines in the surroundings, the interest in Broken Hill was reduced equally fast and today slightly over 20,000 people are living there.
Despite its limited amount of inhabitants, Broken Hill is one of the most interesting places for the visitors. It is located in the outback, 1160km away from Sydney, and not only the distance but also the number of sights, worth seeing, requires at least a couple of days to be spent in the region. Start exploring from Silverton, the most renowned town in the whole region. Silverton took part in some famous movies like Mad Max 2, due to its unique nature.
As Broken Hill turned to be famous as a mining city, the most popular sites in the area are the previously delved mines. Furthermore, the national parks in the surroundings feature Aboriginal Heritage Sites where numerous tours are available for those who would like to learn more about the life of Aboriginals. The lakes are also a part of the environment, some man-made, some natural. As a result, all of them are like oasis in the precious Australian outback.
Australia is renowned as "red continent". Broken Hill stands as a very good proof for this myth since it is dominated by red color up to the horizon. If your eyes start to look for different colors in this strong monopoly of red, head to Tibooburra where lovely wild flowers can be seen at the correct season.
By the way, did you know that Royal Flying Doctor Service has a base in Broken Hill? Don't miss the chance to inspect the base. You can even have a look at the airplanes and get yourself informed in detail.
Broken Hill is located pretty far away from every big city. It is over 1000km away from Sydney and over 500km away from Adelaide. Nevertheless, reaching the area and getting around is very easy, thanks to public transport. Both trains and buses are available and you even have an option to head all the way to Perth taking Indian Pacific line.
